José Zurdo graduated in Medicine and Surgery at University of Bilbao 1983 and completed his medical speciality in Estomatology and Dentistry during 1986 at the University of Barcelona (Spain).
After working as General Dentist in Barcelona he opened his own practice in Vitoria (Spain) that he ran successfully for 12 years during which José developed a special interest in the field of Dental Implantology. This interest soon developed into a passion for dental implantology and, after training at several institutions throughout Europe, José completed an MSc in Implantology and Oral Rehabilitation in 1995 awarded by the New York University College of Dentistry and the European School of Oral Rehabilitation, Implantology and Biomaterials.
To further enhance José’s passion in clinical excellence, he moved to Houston completing a 1-year advanced course specialising in surgical techniques in the field of Periodontology, soon to realise that this field is the foundation of all areas of Dentistry and especially, Implant Dentistry.
In the search of cutting-edge knowledge in this area, José moved to Sweden in 1999, completing a 3-years full-time program at the University of Gothenburg, which is worldwide recognized as the reference centre of clinical and research excellence in the fields of Periodontology and Implantology. During this period, he further developed his clinical skills and also his experience in research and teaching. He obtained a University Diploma followed by an MSc and the recognition as Specialist in Periodontology by The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare. The General Dental Council also recognized him as Specialist in 2002.
Since 2002 he has been a very active clinician and educator in the UK. He has been the leading Periodontist at the Carisbrooke Specialist Dental Centre in Leicester well known for their excellence in periodontal and implant dentistry.
He was a clinical instructor of the postgraduate course in Periodontology (MClinDent) at the Eastman Dental Institute (London) in 2003, regular lecturer at Arminum Research and Dental Education Center, Rimini (Italy) in 2002-2004, and at St Ann’s Dental Education Centre in Manchester (2004-2007). José was the leader of the postgraduate program in Periodontology at The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) that he delivered from 2007 to 2012. His contribution included the conception and creation of the structure of the course. He maintains his collaboration with the University as honorary lecturer and clinical instructor for the MSc in Implantology, of which Carisbrooke Dental Practice is a recognised training centre.
His main areas of clinical expertise are management of severe periodontal disease cases with complex interdisciplinary demands (periodontal, implant and restorative interfaces), hard and soft tissue grafting techniques, microsurgical plastic procedures and implants in compromised sites. Recently he has completed a course in Budapest under the highly acclaimed Istvan Urban (“Advanced Surgical Master Curriculum in Regenerative Implant Dentistry”) to master the most advanced techniques in bone regeneration.
