Dr Michael Hodgson

Specialist in Prosthodontics

Michael was born and raised in Manchester and attended Stockport Grammar School. He trained at King’s College Hospital London and qualified in December 1981. He was awarded honours in Pathology and Microbiology. During his time as a student he was awarded the Medical Protection Society prize for an elective study on the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients in Toronto at the Hospital for Sick Children and in London at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Upon qualification he served a short service commission of 5 years in the Royal Air Force as a dental officer, serving in the United Kingdom and Germany. In 1986 he joined Carisbrooke Dental Practice and in 1995 was awarded his Membership in General Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In June of 2000 he was awarded Specialist status in Prosthodontics by the General Dental Council and much of his time is spent providing treatment for patients referred from their own dentist to receive his specialist care, after which they are returned to their own dentists for their ongoing routine dental care.

Michael practices a full range of prosthodontics, the majority of his time is now spent placing and restoring dental implants, of which he has 21 years experience, having been trained at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London. As well as providing dental implant treatment, Michael is also interested in providing advanced crown and bridgework for patients with broken down dentitions and with complex problems. He is also interested in problems which patients may have experienced with previous implant treatment. Michael’s preferred implant system is the Dentsply Astra implant system and is a member of the Association of Dental Implantology and the Astra PEERS group, but he also has experience with the Dentsply Ankylos and Straumann systems.

In 2004 he was jointly awarded, with Neil Millington, the James Hull and Associates “Specialist of the Year Award”. He is committed to post graduate education and has lectured in this country and abroad, and mentored a number of younger dentists through the Royal College of Surgeons’ Diploma in Dental Implantolgy. and has been an examiner for the Diploma in General Dental Practice. He has two grown up children, a daughter and a son and enjoys travelling especially to areas where he can practise his main hobby of scuba diving.
